The objective of the Alabama Gourd Society is to promote the culture and crafting of gourds; to provide informational and educational service to its members and the public in general; and to provide an Annual Gourd Festival for the promotion of gourds and gourd crafting.
The Alabama Gourd Society became a reality on September 23, 2000 when American Gourd Society president John Sturgeon passed the Charter to president Glenn Burkhalter at the Alabama Gourd Show dinner. Alabama has been the Tau chapter of the American Gourd Society since then.
The
idea was conceived in the Spring of 1999 when gourd growers, crafters
and enthusiasts gathered in Cullman, AL to discuss the possibility
of becoming a state society. ALGS and its more than 100 members
(to date) owe Veronica Hadley, a great vote of thanks for all the hard
work and late hours she invested in the two shows while laying all the
groundwork to establish the Alabama Chapter. All
this
while still doing an admirable job as Director of Tourism for the
Cullman
Area Chamber of Commerce. Without
their efforts and actions taken upon the suggestion of our local
Gourdfather, Athel Wilhite, who requested their help in establishing an
Alabama Gourd Society, there would not be an Alabama Chapter at this
time. YA'LL COME!
